Cutty Sark

The clipper Cutty Sark was built in 1869 at Dumbarton, Scotland. She was destined for the tea trade: then an intensely competitive race across the globe from China to London. Once the Suez Canal opened the clippers lost out to the steam ships and the Cutty Sark was used for the Australian wool trade. In 1954 she was restored and moved to a custom-built dry dock at Greenwich, London.

The exceptional elegance and beauty of her line, allied to her incredible speed and wealth of detail have contributed to the unique legend of the Cutty Sark.

Cutty Sark's keel was laid at the Dumbarton yard of Scott, Linton & Co early in 1869, and the ship was launched in November of that year.
